Unlike gemstones and precious metals, pearls are produced by a living organism. This makes pearl
care an important aspect of owning pearl jewelry. While pearls may look indestructible, they are in
fact very delicate when subjected to certain types of environments. However, this doesn't mean
that taking care of your Tahitian black pearls is a hard task. With a few simple reminders and
tips, you can prolong the beauty of your pearl jewelry for a very long time.
Make it a habit to wear your pearls after applying your perfurme, hairspray and cosmetics.
Keep your pearls away from direct contact with mild or hard acids such as cosmetics and perfum ingredients, excessive sweat, and food ingredients that contain vinegar.
As pearls contain 2.2% water, it is recommended that you keep your pearl jewelry away from prolonged exposure to hot and dry environments, particularly under the direct rays of the sun, as this can dehydrate the pearl and crack the nacre layers.
At the very least, it s recommended that you wipe your pearl jewelry with a damp or moist lint-free cloth and let dry before storing.
It is also advisable to wash your pearls with mild soap and warm water and therafter wrapping it in tissue or clean cloth to let dry. Moistening your pearls by soaking them in water and then drying them with a clean cloth from time to time is also recommended.
Occasionally wipe your pearls with a chamois cloth that contains a few droplets of olive oil is also a great way to maintain the lustre of your pearls. You can also use a clean soft cloth in place of chamois if you prefer.
Store your pearl jewelry in a separate jewelry box or a soft pouch from your other jewelry to avoid scratches. If you're storing your pearl jewelry for long periods of time, place them in a damp cloth prior to storing and re-dampen when needed.
Pearl necklaces, strands and bracelets are usualy strung together by a special string of silk, unless they're strung together by a precious metal such as gold. If you frequently wear such jewelry, it is recommended that you have them restrung once a year, or when the silk string looks worn.
